When at Saskatoon’s Farmers’ Market be sure to visit Wally Satzewich and Gail Vandersteen for vegetables with a different flare. At Wally’s Urban Market Garden you can buy specialty vegetables including delicious rainbow and button carrots, Jerusalem artichokes, fingerling and baby potato varieties, flavorful small onions, summer and winter squash, golden and rainbow beets, salad greens and many other garden foods. My favorites are the sweet red carrots and I love using the button variety in my stews.
Vegetables are packaged in bundles which sell at 2 for 5 dollars.
Wally’s background in growing vegetables began in the mid 1980’s when his family bought acreage in the Saskatoon area. In 1999, Wally moved from conventional market gardening to urban based: intensive eco-friendly gardening on small plots, otherwise known as spin-farming. Urban Market Garden plots are located throughout Saskatoon and Saskatchewan’s Pleasantdale area.
Wally has authored 2 books on spin farming: Spin-Farming 2.0: Production Planning and Crop Profiles and Spin-Farming Basics, available online or through spinfarming.com.
